Unique work to inspire the everyday

MY INSPIRATION

My work is a an expression of my dreams, insights, passions and struggles. The discipline of ceramics - from the understanding of the clay itself to the repetition of form and subtlety of decoration and glaze - is a complex and demanding activity. But it is full of meditative moments, whether at the wheel, washing ash, studying glaze tests or opening a kiln. I am always moving forward in the quest for a more exquisite product; something that expresses the wonder of the world and inspires a hope that human beings might live in harmony with each other and the natural world.

MY PROCESS

I work with dark clay fired to high temperatures with a layering of slips and oxides that give depth and randomness to the finished work. My glazes are self-developed using wood ash as a key ingredient: a dynamic flux that brings unexpected surprises and unique effects. All work starts with the wheel, but many go on to follow a different path.

Glazing is the high point of my process; the instinctive feel for what glaze or glaze combinations to use on a particular shape before the final alchemy of the kiln.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

The Product: Handmade ceramic products are unique pieces. Forms and decoration may differ from each other. There may be rough textures and surface cracks or crazing. These are not faults but part of the piece’s character. Firing may also cause some distortion or imperfection in the product’s shape. Again, this is part of the process and should be regarded as a feature not a fault. All work is fired to stoneware temperatures and will tolerate a low temperature oven or microwave. Handwashing is preferred but we always put mugs and bowls in the dishwasher at home.
